Lucan won a tension packed Metropolitan Cup final against a talented and sporting Milltown side, at a windy and sometimes wet Lucan GC on Sunday 28/8/2011. This date will have a special place in the history of the club because of the quality of golf that needed to be played to win a hole, not to mind the match.
A large crowd, from both clubs, followed the matches throughout the afternoon. The excitement reached a crescendo as the matches reached the final 3 holes and the advantage ebbed and flowed. The players seemed immune to the pressure as they played shot after magnificent shot.
The winning putt was eventually holed by Michael Carton. But this honour fell to him by a mere matter of seconds as Michael O’Donovan sank his putt fractionally earlier on an adjacent green.
The outpouring of joy at that point had to be seen to be believed. Brian Carton, team manager, was swamped by players and supporters alike. Brian had put body and soul into managing this team and everyone wanted to show their appreciation of that commitment.
Among those on the course were a very tired but happy bunch of junior members who had carried the scoreboards that accompanied every match. They had also communicated these scores back to the clubhouse to ensure that those who were too old or infirm, or just Dub supporters, were kept up to date with progress. Because of their efforts the crowds were able to move quickly to where the most critical action was taking place. They greatly contributed to the success of the day and their efforts were much appreciated. They are great golfers themselves and we expect to see them playing in events like this in the not too distant future.
Future posts will feature the caddies, player’s families and of course the players themselves. We will finish this post with a photo of the team and panel, team management and club officers.
Please check back for more on this momentous occasion.
