CHARITY BEGINS CLOSE TO HOME – AND GOES A LONG WAY
On Friday May 24th Captain Jimmy and Lady Captain Carole of Lucan Golf Club held their Joint Charity Day in aid of the Alzheimer Society of Ireland Lucan Branch.
Some 40 teams of 4 played in the event and thanks to the generosity of our sponsor, Automatic Fire and Integrated Solutions, all the prizes on the day were taken care of.
After quite literally going shop to shop, door to door and business to business in the town, both Jimmy & Carole were overwhelmed by the level of support they received. Most of the local businesses and members of Lucan Golf club donated one way or another including the raffle prizes which was held that evening. A number of other donated prizes were auctioned on the night by the club’s trustee Kevin Doyle and a substantial sum was raised.
Captains Jimmy and Carole chose this charity because The Alzheimer Society provides lots of different support for those who have Alzheimer’s and dementia. The social clubs, like the one in St Mary’s parish centre in Lucan which meets every Wednesday morning, were set up to provide an environment outside the home for those with Alzheimer’s and their carers to socialise have a coffee, a chat, a singsong, etc. The Alzheimer Society saw a need for this and provides it even though they have no funding for it. They rely on volunteers, sponsorship and fundraisers like today.
‘It’s very encouraging to think that we all gave a little and when you put it all together it can make a massive difference to a worthy cause like this’ commented Lady Captain Carole.
All in all, the day was a tremendous success raising €9,643 and it was presented to Adrienne McAvienne of The Alzheimer Society. As the sum raised was a significant amount they can now fund the Lucan and Bloomfield (in Rathfarnham) Social Club and start a new support group in Lucan.
